Veteran South Indian actor and Padma Shri recipient S. Sukumari passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening after battling burns suffered following an accident at her B.N.Road residence in T Nagar last month. She was 74.

Born in 1940 in then Travancore, Sukumari began her career at the age of 10 with a cameo in Tamil movie ‘Oru Iravu’ in 1951. In a career spanning more than five decades, she acted in over 2,500 films, including in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Oriya and Bengali. A versatile actor, she shared the screen with big names, including Mamooty, Mohanlal, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and also yesteryear stars MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Nageswara Rao and Prem Nazir.

Wife of famous film director-producer late Bhimsingh, Sukumari received numerous accolades, including the Tamil Nadu State’s Kalaimani Award in 1991-92, the Kerala State Award on four occasions, Padma Shri in 2003 and the National Award for the best supporting actress in 2011.



Sukumari suffered burns when her sari caught fire from a lamp while she was praying in her pooja room in the morning of February 27 at her T Nagar residence. She was taken to a private hospital and shifted to a private hospital in Perumbakkam the next day when her condition worsened.

CM condoles

Condoling her death, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in her message said Sukumari’s demise was a huge loss the film industry. South Indian Film Artistes Association president R.Sarathkumar remembered her as a warm person who always praised the actors and being an inspiration to others. Actor and renowned television producer Radhika Sarathkumar recalled the many dance performances Sukumari gave alongside the famous Travancore sisters – Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini. “I remember as a young girl accompanying my mother to the dance programmes. She was an accomplished dancer and a wonderful actor. Above all, she was a very caring human being.”

Sukumari is also known for her stage career, most prominently as a member of satirist and political commentator Cho Ramasamy’s theatre group.

Sukumari സുകുമാരി (6 October 1940[2] – 26 March 2013) was an Indian film actress who has primarily acted in Malayalam and Tamil films. She had been acting since she was 10 years old[3] and has acted in various roles. The total number of her films is presumed to be more than 3000. In 2003, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions towards the arts. And she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Namma Gramam(2010).[4] Sukumari died on 26 March 2013 following a heart attack while under treatment for burn injuries received while lighting the pooja lamp at her residence in Chennai.[5]..

Career

She was born in Nagercoil, erstwhile Travancore State, now at Tamil Nadu in 1940.[6] She was born in Nagarcoil to Madhavan Nair and Sathyabhama, she left them early in life to study dance with her aunt Saraswathi in Chennai, alongside her first cousins the famous Travancore sisters - Travancore Sisters, Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini (their mothers are sisters). She learned dance with the sisters and mastered dance forms like Keralanadanam, Kathakali and Bharathanatyam.[7] She went for an all-India tour with the sisters. Sukumari was noticed by a director when she went to the sets of a film with Padmini, and she debuted in the lead role in the Tamil film Orarivu.[7]. She has acted in various Malayalam films of the black and white age, like Chettathi, Kusruthikkuttan, Kunjali Marakkar, Thacholi Othenan, Yakshi and Karinizhal. She later became popular acting in various films of Priyadarshan like Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Oodarathuammava Aalariyam, Boeing Boeing and Vandanam. She was also noticed in various films directed by Balachandra Menon like Manicheppu Thurannappol and Karyam Nissaram.[7] In later years she played a major role in Nizhalkkuthu (2002) directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan.[8] She had played many notable mother roles. She has acted in films in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi, and used her own voice in all languages without using dubbing artists.[7]

Personal Life

Sukumari married director A. Bhimsingh in 1959. He died in 1978. The couple has a son, Suresh.[9]

Death

On 27 February 2013, Sukumari sustained burn injuries while lighting the traditional lamp in the prayer room of her B.N.Road residence in T Nagar, Chennai. She was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Chennai, but was shifted to Global Hospital when her condition worsened.[10] On 26 March, she died of a heart attack she had suffered from while recovering at around 5 p.m (IST).
